BA (Hons) Special Effects Make Up Design and Prosthetics is a very versatile and modern degree that will equip you the skills and knowledge you need to create memorable characters for film, television and theatre productions:
• Students’ focus is on special effects prosthetics and character design for this fast-moving industry. Learners are exposed to industry-standard techniques, linking both artistic and creative expression while incorporating key workshop manufacturing fundamentals. Each level of study will engage and challenge learners to expand upon their skillset, using a variety of materials within specific professional contexts.
• By exploring a very wide range of materials and techniques, students will have the chance to practice every aspect of the Special Effects artist’s role within the industry. They will see their designs and ideas materialise and will create a functional and comprehensive portfolio which will allow them to promote themselves effectively in the industry.
• Our students also get the opportunity to be taught and work side to side with award winning professionals with long experience and passion for their art, get inspired and participate to a holistic learning experience.

The Special Effects Make-up Design and Prosthetics degree, invites anyone who has a passion for creation, to discover fantastic opportunities for learning and employment. Studying with us will not just help you to gain a degree but to get a true learning experience along with other adult learners who share the same dream.

You will attain a large variety of self-management, team working and communicating skills which will direct your footsteps in the ever-changing creative industry. You will gain the ability to analyse, formulate independent conclusions and identify your own strengths, weaknesses and areas of development. Your enthusiasm will be framed with the ability to work under pressure, understand deadlines, discipline and accommodate change.

The programme has a very strong reputation within the industry and as such, benefits from links to a number of high-profile operators such as Millennium FX, Hybrid FX and Kristyan Mallet Make Up Effects. These and other industry partners have provided work experience opportunities and internships for Grimsby students.

The course is designed to ensure that all learners have equal opportunity to participate in all aspects of programmes, regardless of disability, age, race, religion or gender. The learning and teaching approach is designed to be inclusive and celebrates diversity within the student body.

Finally, as the programme fits within the Faculty of Digital and Creative Industries at Grimsby, students are encouraged to work on projects with undergraduates from different areas to simulate real-life experience in the creative industries.

Level 4 – Year 1
In your first year, you will be introduced and exposed to a wide variety of vital skills, such as designing, sculpting, moulding, casting, application and painting. This is coupled with academic input which is contextualized around the specialism of arts and society in general.

Level 5 – Year 2

In your second year, you will move on to application and development of the skills learnt in level 4, with more advanced practical applications of prosthetics, designs and sculpting processes. Again, some theory is embedded in delivery in order to deepen your understanding of the subject and prepare yourself for level 6’s requirements.

Level 6 – Year 3

The last year of your studies is the “springboard to industry”; the culmination of progressively increased self-direction, critique and responsibility. As well as dissertation, you will design and produce a final major project, calling on key principles that have been delivered since level 4 and expanding on them. You will focus on finding and presenting to the world your own professional identity and have a chance to practically prepare yourself for the industry.
