We welcome A Levels in a wide range of subjects, especially in those relevant to the course for which you apply.

We may consider a standalone AS in a relevant subject, if it is taken along with other A Levels and if an A Level has not been taken in the same subject. However, you will not be disadvantaged if you do not have a standalone AS subject as we will not ordinarily use them in our offers.

You’ll graduate from this fast-paced course as a visual storyteller, with an in-depth knowledge of both digital and analogue photography, as well as video and multimedia. On this dynamic and responsive course, you’ll learn to shoot real-world photography with a clear sense of audience and purpose. From long-form documentary photography and breaking news, to immersive multimedia pieces, you’ll learn to tell visual stories in creative, fresh and engaging ways.

Our internationally renowned team will equip you with the skills and connections to succeed in the demanding and exciting world of Press and Editorial Photography.

Modules

Year one:

From day one you'll be immersed in the working practices of picture desks, agencies and successful press and editorial practitioners. In your 1st year you'll discover the technical and creative realities of your craft, while being supported by course staff to master the theory of reading the image, the history of the discipline and the fundamental elements of press and editorial business practice.

The 1st year allows you to engage in practical modules, complemented by important theoretical studies in communication and copyright. In addition, you'll also study practical magazine and layout production along with a module in business operations to prepare you for the industry.

Year two:

Independence, exploration and experimentation will drive you through a multiple genre portfolio that will test your practice and professionalism, informing your place and direction within press and editorial photography. Theoretical studies alongside ethics, representation and media law as well as work placement support your development and your maturing photographic voice. 2nd year students are eligible to apply for study abroad through the Erasmus Programme.

Throughout your 2nd year you'll be supported in developing your professional position via print and online publications, exhibitions, work placements and effective social networking. You'll also enjoy a semester-long multimedia module that introduces you to audio collection and the broad skills required for creating broadcast quality storytelling.

Year three:

Ownership and autonomy are the qualities you'll develop in your 3rd year. Across both terms you'll be working on your final major project within the subjects of your choice, compiling a portfolio to launch you and your career beyond the course.

The considerable practical component is supported through your dissertation, critical review skills, honed business practice and focused outputs. This year will see you take ownership of your photographic identity, laying the foundations for your career in press and editorial photography.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

A few years ago graduates from this subject were having a very hard time but things have improved a lot thanks to our active media, film and photographic industries - much the most common employers for this group. The most common jobs are in the arts — as photographers, audio-visual technicians, operators and designers, as directors, as artists and as graphic designers. Training in presenting sound and graphics is useful in other industries as well, so you can find graduates in journalism, in advertising, in business management, in events management and in web design and IT.
