We welcome A Levels in a wide range of subjects, especially in those relevant to the course for which you apply.

60 credits (with a minimum of 45 credits achieved at level 3) in a relevant subject.

We may consider a standalone AS in a relevant subject, if it is taken along with other A Levels and if an A Level has not been taken in the same subject. However, you will not be disadvantaged if you do not have a standalone AS subject as we will not ordinarily use them in our offers.

Drawing

Become an expert in drawing, learning about its history and contemporary practice and its application across a broad range of disciplines. The structure of this studio-based course encourages a strong peer group dynamic, with opportunities for working together in off-site locations.Through set projects and exercises youll learn to record the material world through observation, but also to draw from your inner world, from memory and imagination, theories and systems, and concepts and narratives. Sessions in life drawing, printmaking, digital methods, reportage and animation will equip you with the skills to support the exploration and realisation of your ideas. As the degree progresses, well encourage you to develop a drawing language of your own. Ultimately youll take charge of your own projects, consolidating your practice in preparation for a creative future.

Modules

Year One:

The 1st year explores drawing through the practices of artists past and present. You'll consider subjects such as perspective, architecture, digital and historical techniques as well as natural environments for inspiration and learning. Weekly life drawing classes will engage you in many of the formal drawing issues of proportion, form, tone and structure. To support your studies, we offer optional visits to museums, galleries and other locations including the Isles of Scilly and London, to view original drawings from various collections.

Year Two:

In your 2nd year you'll take part in longer, more sustained projects examining contemporary applications of drawing, including mapping, communication, narrative, reportage, animation and art practice. The year features a student-managed exhibition and further opportunities to get your work into public venues.

You'll deliver a presentation about a drawing related subject, and take part in the research and group delivery of a Drawing Debate with 3rd year students. You'll also engage in a work-based learning experience with an organisation, individual, location or business of your choice to put your drawing into professional context. Project work allows for more personal strands of exploration but is still supported by tutors, life drawing, printmaking and relevant workshops. Visiting lecturers are a regular feature of your 2nd year, while our European study trip is a popular option.

Year Three:

In your 3rd year you'll work on a project, reflecting and building on personal discoveries and ambitions. This is complemented by your dissertation, which is supported through personal tutorials. All students contribute to our series of Drawing Debates and work on one major negotiated project, which will demonstrate your learning, showcasing your ideas and skills, culminating in an exhibition.
