We welcome A Levels in a wide range of subjects, especially in those relevant to the course for which you apply.

We may consider a standalone AS in a relevant subject, if it is taken along with other A Levels and if an A Level has not been taken in the same subject. However, you will not be disadvantaged if you do not have a standalone AS subject as we will not ordinarily use them in our offers.

Choreography

This course will develop your practice as a dance maker and celebrate the uniqueness of you as an artist. This outward facing course is designed to launch you into the world of dance, through exploring the twin strands of dance and choreography.

You’ll benefit from the collaborative environment at AMATA, where you’ll work with students from across the disciplines, and have access not just to dance studios, but to all our practice and performance spaces.

Modules

Year One:

The first year provides solid grounding in skills and techniques of dance performance and choreography. It is based on a set of modules which provide you with a focused, physically-based experience. In addition to regular body-work classes, you are encouraged to explore and challenge your ideas of performance and choreography through studio practice (individual and group work), lectures and seminars.

You’ll also get the opportunity to engage with site-based practices in a variety of settings and locations and to develop strategies for making connections between practice and theory in preparation for year two.

Year Two (specialist skills):

You’ll get involved with a range of directed, supervised and self-generated dance and performance-based projects and processes. Building on the intensive physical training in year one, you’ll continue to develop your technical and skills training through applied techniques while developing your specialist interest in choreography or performance and its cross-disciplinary contexts. You’ll be offered choices between choreographic modules or performance oriented modules.

Year Three (towards independence):

You’ll take charge of your own learning by pursuing individual research trajectories and becoming independent practitioners through collaborative projects, ongoing advanced physical training, and creative and choreographic processes. You’ll develop your ideas in a variety of forms including a written research project. This project encourages in-depth research into a chosen field within dance and choreography, producing effective communicators ready to articulate your practice with confidence. A professional practice project allows you to realise your potential at a professional level to produce, market, choreograph and perform work to launch your professional future

Many dance graduates from 2015 went straight into dance or choreography jobs, and there are good employment rates overall. Work in education, in schools and colleges, as freelance dance teachers or in sports and fitness, are also common. Be aware that freelancing and self-employment is common (over one in five dance graduates from 201t were working for themselves), as are what is termed 'portfolio careers' — having several part-time jobs or commissions at once, and building your contacts and work experience can be very important for dance students to find their first job, so be prepared to work your people skills.
