On the International Relations Joint Honours programme at DMU you will learn how to analyse contemporary events in international politics and develop policy responses to them. Lecturers will help you to identify the underlying global forces that shape decisions on crucial issues like the rise of China, the Syrian crisis, climate change and development. You will benefit from innovative teaching approaches linking theory and practice such as simulations, engagement with House of Commons committees and the DMU Policy Commission. You can experience a unique learning environment, with the opportunity to participate in real debates, attend conferences and learn from guest speakers including prominent political figures such as the former Prime Minister Gordon Brown and the House of Commons Speaker, Rt Hon John Bercow. We are the only university in the UK to hold both Congress to Campus and European Parliament to Campus with former members of US Congress and former Members of European Parliament to enhance your study experience. You can join our lively Politics Society with topical debates and well-known guest speakers which have included David Blunkett and Alastair Campbell in previous years. There will be opportunity to attend talks from practitioners and alumni to help you develop an understanding of the range of potential careers for International Relations graduates. We are one of only three universities in the UK to be named a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence in 2013, in recognition of research and teaching excellence in European studies. There will be opportunities to study abroad in countries such as Hong Kong, Germany and Belgium for up to a year with one of our Erasmus+ partner universities in Europe, or through a #DMUglobal international experience. We are rated in the top 10 most popular universities in the UK by UCAS.

Assessment methods

You will be taught by a team whose work has achieved top scores in quality assessment exercises and by individuals who have National Teaching Fellow Status in recognition of their outstanding teaching. We are also active researchers and share our current work with you.

We use a variety of formats in our classes. In the first two years you attend weekly hour-long lectures and seminars in which you discuss the issues raised in lectures. In the third year teaching is in a two-hour workshop format where you often get to decide on the topics that are debated. Throughout the course you will read around the areas being covered using course books and you must keep yourself up-to-date with developments in current affairs.

Assessment is through coursework (presentations, seminar contributions, your portfolio, essays and reports) and usually an exam or test. You will also be challenged through simulation games, problem solving exercises, online collaborative projects and policy papers. Assessment is typically weighted as follows in the first year of International Relations and Politics BA (Hons):

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Journalism roles are very sought after, and competition fierce, and with the Internet disrupting business models, this is likely to continue. It's not impossible to get into roles with a first degree — quite a few do - but they can often be insecure or on a freelance basis, and a lot of jobs in journalism go to postgraduates. Unpaid work is not the norm for new journalists, but it’s rather more common than for other roles, as personal contacts and work experience are important ways for would-be journalists to get their target jobs. The skills you can gain from a journalism degree can be useful in a range of industries, and so grads from these courses can be found in a wide range of jobs - first degree graduates often get jobs in marketing and PR where their skills at drafting copy to deadlines are appreciated. London tends to dominate the jobs market for journalism graduates - a quarter of journalism graduates went to work there - but 2015 graduates found opportunities elsewhere, particularly in larger cities with good local media.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The numbers of people taking politics degrees fell sharply last year and we'll keep an eye on this one - it can't really be because of graduates getting poor outcomes as politics grads do about as well as graduates on average. Most politics or international relations graduates don't actually go into politics - although many do, as activists, fundraisers and researchers. Jobs in local and central government are also important. Other popular jobs include marketing and PR, youth and community work, finance roles, HR and academic research (you usually need a postgraduate degree to get into research). Because so many graduates get jobs in the civil service, a lot of graduates find themselves in London after graduating. Politics is a very popular postgraduate subject, and so about one in five politics graduates go on to take another course - usually a one-year Masters - after they finish their degrees.
