You’ll have access to our computing facilities, which enable you to gain experience using mathematical software packages, like MAPLE and MATLAB®. You’ll also receive one-to-one assistance from Sigma, the university’s Centre for Excellence in Mathematics and Statistics Support.

You’ll be taught by a teaching team which includes active researchers in applied mathematics and statistics. With expertise in fluid dynamics, complex systems and climate change, the team will share their current and published research findings through teaching and supervising projects, as well as offering opportunities to apply for summer research internships at no additional cost (subject to competitive application). Past students have, for example, undertaken internships analysing social networks of past cultures through ancient and mythological narratives or studied lattice models of polymers.

We encourage you to adopt an international perspective with opportunities to conduct Online International Learning (OIL) activities with students from around the world, participate in field trips overseas or spend a year studying abroad in Europe, America or Australia. We also provide support to help you apply for professional experience on placement opportunities. Previous sandwich year opportunities have been offered by GlaxoSmithKline pharmaceuticals, Jagex Game Studios, The Warner Bros, National Grid, Morgan Stanley financial services, E.ON, Cummins, TATA and Birmingham Airport.

Note that travel costs for mandatory field trips are covered by the University’s flying-start scheme. The cost of optional international field trips are borne by the student. All field trips are subject to availability, application and visa requirements.

Modules

Our main study themes are:

* **Statistics**: You should learn techniques for the collection, analysis, interpretation, presentation, and organisation of different types of complex data. We will cover probability, hypothesis tests, analysis of variance, regression models, design of experiments, a range of advanced topics in statistics and statistical computing.
* **Algebra and calculus**: We will cover the core mathematical methods with an introduction to abstract algebra, including some number theory. We will examine the theory of real functions and the mathematics underpinning it.
* **Mathematical and numerical analysis**: Provides a rigorous foundation in the analysis of sequences, series and continuous functions, including differentiability and the Riemann integral. We will examine a variety of numerical analysis methods, such as graph theory, and develop basic scientific programming skills to be able to use relevant programming languages, such as Python or Matlab.
* **Mathematical modelling**: We will explore means of mathematical modelling, using case studies to illustrate different techniques and then applying them during laboratory sessions. We cover differential equations, including linear and nonlinear systems, qualitative theory, phase space, phase portraits, trajectories and the bifurcation theory for parametrized equations. We also study partial differential equation and the methods to solve them, including separation of variables, method of characteristics, integral transforms, Green’s function etc. We will develop the use of Newtonian mechanics and its use in modelling physical situations, together with a brief introduction to special relativity.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Want to feel needed? This is one of the most flexible degrees of all and with so much of modern work being based on data, there are options everywhere for maths graduates. With all that training in handling figures, it's hardly surprising that a lot of maths graduates go into well-paid jobs in the IT or finance industries, and last year, a maths graduate in London could expect a very respectable average starting salary of £27k. And we're always short of teachers in maths, so that is an excellent option for anyone wanting to help the next generation. What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The business and research sectors worry that the UK hasn't got enough people with good statistics skills, and as stats are at the heart of so much of the economy, and we only have a few hundred graduates a year in the discipline, this type of degree can be very useful and versatile. The finance industry is very popular with this group, and they're far more likely to be working in London than most other graduates. And who can blame them — statistics graduates starting work in London were earning an average of nearly £29k just six months after leaving university. There is also demand from the Scottish finance sector in Edinburgh and Glasgow - particularly in banking and insurance. But a good statistician can find work almost anywhere that data can be analysed - which, in an online world, is almost anywhere - and many industries struggle to find enough statisticians to fulfil demand, so stay flexible and you can find a variety of options.
