Course description

The Foundation course provides a pathway to BEng and MEng degree courses in Aeronautical Engineering. The overall aim is to provide a well-rounded education and also specialised training for a professional career in the aeronautical, air transport and associated industries or the industries underpinned by the mechanical engineering disciplines, including energy engineering and automotive engineering. This will include the research, development, design, production, commissioning and management aspects of those industries. The emphasis in the Foundation courses is on developing your study skills and ability in mathematics, physical sciences, engineering and computing.


This programme, which is only offered full-time, starts with a Year 0 foundation year that provides the essential mathematical and scientific background necessary to progress to Part 1 of the BEng programme in Aeronautical Engineering. The foundation year is studied at Westminster Kingsway College at their Gray’s Inn Campus. The BEng programme is divided into three Parts (Parts 1, 2 and 3), each occupying a full academic year, which leads to a BEng degree that is accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society and Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Just over a thousand UK graduates got a degree in aerospace engineering in 2015. There are a few dedicated employers, unevenly spread around the country, and so there's often competition for graduates looking for their first job - which leads to a relatively high (although improving) early unemployment rate, and a good grade is particularly important for graduates. Sponsorship and work experience can be key if you're after the most sought-after roles in the industry. Starting salaries are usually good and graduates commonly go into the aerospace (yes, this does include manufacture of equipment for satellites and space operations) and defence industries. Bear in mind that a lot of courses are four years long, and lead to an MEng qualification — this is necessary if you want to become a Chartered Engineer.
