Course description

As the longest established Actuarial Science degree in England, this course combines studies in mathematics, probability, statistics and economics, leading students to develop a set of skills in financial risk management that are in high demand across the industry. This course is delivered by Cass Business School, City, University of London. Actuarial science involves the application of quantitative skills to problems in finance that normally involve risk or uncertainty. The degree provides students with the skills to start their actuarial career, with the added flexibility of allowing students to alternatively use these skills to enter risk management, investment management or financial analysis upon graduation. This degree can provide exemptions from subjects CT1-CT8 of the actuarial profession's examinations.


Year one: In the first year, students study six core modules that provide the foundations for later study, including a mathematics module and introductory courses in financial mathematics, economics and probability and statistics that assume no prior knowledge of the respective subjects. Year two: In year two, the focus moves from mathematics to actuarial science, statistics and probability. Core modules include financial reporting, contingencies and stochastic models. Year three: In the final year, three taught core modules allow students to develop an in-depth understanding of actuarial and statistical subjects, while a wide range of electives cover actuarial science, statistics, business and economics. Students also undertake a final-year project in an area relevant to their interests and ambitions.

The business and research sectors worry that the UK hasn't got enough people with good statistics skills, and as stats are at the heart of so much of the economy, and we only have a few hundred graduates a year in the discipline, this type of degree can be very useful and versatile. The finance industry is very popular with this group, and they're far more likely to be working in London than most other graduates. And who can blame them — statistics graduates starting work in London were earning an average of nearly £29k just six months after leaving university. There is also demand from the Scottish finance sector in Edinburgh and Glasgow - particularly in banking and insurance. But a good statistician can find work almost anywhere that data can be analysed - which, in an online world, is almost anywhere - and many industries struggle to find enough statisticians to fulfil demand, so stay flexible and you can find a variety of options.
