This new flexible degree in Education and Social Policy gives you the opportunity to learn more about the challenges facing society by combining a range of relevant social and educational subjects, enabling you to consider these in various international and comparative contexts.

Combining these areas provides opportunities for those who wish to work in professions associated with education, but who don't wish necessarily to become teachers. It is designed for students who are looking for choice and flexibility in their studies, or who don’t want to commit to one career path at the start of their studies. Please note that this course doesn't allow you to qualify as a teacher, but it will equip you to explore postgraduate routes into teaching careers (via the PGCE).

Social policy is a theoretical and applied subject which draws on many different disciplines such as history, sociology, anthropology, economics, law, psychology and politics to improve our understanding of how different societies organise their resources to meet individual and social needs and how they measure progress in these areas.

Education studies allows you to develop knowledge of the education systems of the UK and beyond, looking at issues including policy, social justice, equity and inclusion.

The course will be based around inquiry led approaches, considering key questions such as how should education and social policy adapt to a changing global, digital, connected and information-rich world? How can education and social policy effectively address the needs of a more diverse society?

This programme is subject to validation for September 2020 entry and the information provided may be subject to change. All new programmes at the University must undergo validation, the purpose of which is to ensure that the proposed programme is aligned to the University's Mission and its content reflects appropriate levels of academic standards and quality.

When you look at employment stats, bear in mind that a lot of students are already working in education when they take this type of course and are studying to help their career development. This means they already have jobs when they start their course, and a lot of graduates continue to study, whilst working, when they complete their courses. What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Just over 1,600 students graduated in social policy in 2015, which makes it one of the smaller social studies subjects. This is a popular subject at Masters level — 750 Masters in social policy were awarded last year - and so a lot of the more sought-after jobs in management and research tend to go to social policy graduates with postgraduate degrees. For those who leave university after their first degree, then jobs in social care (especially community and youth work) and education, the police, marketing and human resources and recruitment are popular — along with local government, although there are fewer of those jobs around than in the past. This degree is a bit less reliant on London for jobs than other similar subjects, so if you'd like to work outside the capital, it might be worth considering - although the jobs still tend to be in big cities.
