Computer Science at Brunel is one of the largest research groups of its kind in the UK. We have a vibrant and multinational community of students, academics and researchers. Computers are the key feature of contemporary life across the world and at the heart of just about everything we do. Its difficult to think of a single thing you might do today that does not in some way incorporate computer technology. This is an innovative, fast-moving area of study, constantly breaking new ground. Consequently, there is strong demand for computing graduates in many commercial, industrial and public sector environments.Our Business Computing courses will give you a thorough understanding of how information technology and computer-based systems help businesses. During the first two years (Levels 1 and 2) youll study modules that are common to all the degrees. In the third year, youll have the opportunity to choose a specialism that interests you. You can specialise in e-business, human computer interaction or social media and you can alter it as you go: choose information systems or computing in level 2, and then choose your specialist options in level 3.You can showcase your software projects at our annual Made in Brunel (Software Innovation) show, with awards presented by the likes of Cisco, Sky and Xerox. We know that when you graduate, youll be working on large projects. Thats why one third of each year of our programmes is project-based. In Level 1 and 2 youll build a software solution in a team, and in your final year youll carry out an individual project.Our strong networks and links with the industry give you access to a great choice of high-quality, professional industrial placements that are supported by our on campus Professional Development Centre. Our lecturers often work as consultants for major blue chip companies at home and overseas. More than 50 academic staff teach in the department, many having a background in the computer industry. Practically all are involved in our applied computing research which includes information systems, software engineering, knowledge-based systems, and simulation modelling. The Department of Computer Science is a member of the Microsoft Alliance, the Apple iOS Academic Developer Programme and is an nVidia CUDA Teaching Center. Our Business Computing graduates go on to careers such as software developer, business analyst, web developer, technical architect or helpdesk engineer. Recent graduates have taken up roles with companies such as Accenture, BP, BBC, FDM and Wipro. The course offers full exemption from the British Computer Societys professional examinations, allowing graduates to attain professional membership of the Society (MBCS) after a shortened period of relevant experience and training. The course also fulfils the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer (full IEng accreditation) and part of the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer (partial CEng accreditation).

Modules

Typically in year 1 you will study, Level1 group project, Introductory Programming, Data and Information, Information Systems and Organisations, Logic and Computation. Typically in year 2 you will study Level graduate development, 2 Group Project, Software Development and Management, Usability Engineering, Business Analysis and Process Modelling, ICTs in Society. In year 3 is an optional work placement. Typically in year 4you will study Final Year Business Computing Project, A substantial individual project you will research in-depth. What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The number of business studies graduates fell significantly last year after a long period of increase. But there were still more than 14,000 degrees awarded and this is the third most popular subject for new graduates. Because so many graduates get business studies degrees, you can find them everywhere in the economy, and very few jobs are completely out of reach for a good business studies graduate. Around 40% go into jobs in finance, sales, recruitment, management (particularly retail) or marketing. There is also a small (but well paid) group who take their technical skills into computing and IT. Thousands of graduates from this subject go into professional jobs every year, and average starting salaries are above the average for all subjects and particularly healthy in London where they top £25k. Graduates with good degree grades in business studies are much more likely to get good jobs, so don’t be complacent, and keep a close eye on your grades.
