Course description

ECE at Brunel is one of the largest disciplines in the university with over 40 full-time academic staff and extensive teaching and research portfolios. Despite its size, our department maintains a friendly community atmosphere between students and staff. Our recent National Student Survey (NSS) results consistently reflect the positive learning experience of our students and the high level of satisfaction with our academic provision. Developed in response to the needs of industry, our degree courses will give you advanced level knowledge and skills in the design of complex electronic, microelectronic and computer systems. Our teaching is research-led and we have strong links with the world of industry which benefit our students when it comes to placements and helpful contacts. The department has five research centres focusing on telecommunications, sensors and instrumentation, sustainable energy and systems, our research findings and expertise feeding directly back into the modules we teach. Brunelâ??s geographical proximity to the highest concentration of the UKâ??s information engineering and telecommunications industry â?? in London and along the M4 corridor â?? means our network of potential work placement contacts is second to none.

Level 1: Core: Digital systems and microprocessors; web design and development; problem solving and programming; computer systems mathematics; internet and network technologies; computer systems workshop. Level 2 Core: Data networks, services and security; computer architecture and interfacing; digital system design and reliability engineering; multimedia content analysis and delivery; object oriented systems programming; engineering group design project; management. Level 3: Work placement. (for thick-sandwich mode of study). Level 4 Core: Individual project; distributed systems and computing; network design and advanced data security. The recession has made things difficult for graduates in this subject and you would normally expect a lower unemployment rate – but most graduates do get jobs quite quickly after university, and starting salaries are pretty good. The most common jobs are in telecommunications, electrical and electronic engineering, but there is some crossover with the computing industry, so many graduates start work in IT and computing jobs. At the moment, there's a particular demand for electrical engineers in the oil and gas industries, electronics and the car and aerospace industries. Bear in mind that a lot of courses are four years long, and lead to an MEng qualification – this is necessary if you want to become a Chartered Engineer.

Information systems courses cover a range of areas, including information design, modelling and the finance industry. How well graduates did made a particular difference in 2012 – computing graduates with good grades were much less likely to be out of work after six months. Most students do get jobs, though, and starting salaries are good – particularly in London, and that’s where over a quarter of graduates started work last year. Be realistic with these degrees – opportunities are not spread throughout the country and you might struggle, for example, to get an information systems job outside the larger cities.
