If you enjoy maths and you wish to learn advanced mathematical and statistical methods and their implementation by computer systems, then the Mathematics degree is an excellent choice. In addition to deepening your understanding of Mathematics and Statistics, you will see applications of the ideas in fields such as industrial quality control, the finance industry, mathematical modelling and biomedical statistics. Building on the concepts and techniques which you have studied previously, this degree will provide you with a coherent collection of advanced mathematical and statistical methods, some of which will be implemented using the latest computer software. Although statistics constitutes an important part of the syllabus, it is not necessary to have studied it at A-level. This programme will meet the educational requirements of the Chartered Mathematician designation, awarded by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, when it is followed by subsequent training and experience in employment to obtain equivalent competences to those specified by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for taught Master's degrees.
Year 1: linear algebra and calculus; structures of mathematics; statistics; statistical problem solving; mathematical problem solving; 1 option module may be taken, including a language option; year 2: mathematical methods; numerical analysis I; statistical modelling; mathematical statistics; 2 options; year 3: students also choose option modules which enables them to specialise in a number of areas; options include: vibrations and acoustic waves; biomedical statistics; symmetry and business; research methods.
