Psychology

Combining psychology with professional counselling gives students a platform to gain knowledge of psychological theory and apply it to real-life person-centred experiences, situations and issues. Offering a wide range of topics, this degree provides transferable skills and a gateway to a career within the industry, with the flexibility to choose the units you study in your final year.

This course aims to educate student’s individuals with a high level of understanding and insight into empirical and theoretical issues within the industry. Graduates from this course will be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of Psychology as an empirical science; develop a well-founded knowledge and critical understanding of the mind and behaviour through learning about all areas of Psychology; acquire a range of research skills and methods to investigate behaviour, culminating in an ability to conduct research independently; acquire a range of communication and interaction skills, so they are able to conduct themselves professionally; apply their knowledge effectively in a variety of contexts.

Students on this course can benefit from opting to take a 30-week placement in industry after your second year, extending your course by a year, although this is not mandatory. This will give you essential real-world experience, placing your theory and skills into practice, and enabling you to harvest a network of professional contacts – all of which are vital for successfully launching a career.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

20 years ago, this was a specialist degree for would-be psychologists but now it is the model of a modern, flexible degree subject. One of the UK's fastest-growing subject at degree level, and the second most popular subject overall (it recently overtook business studies), one in 23 of all graduates last year had psychology degrees. As you'd expect with figures like that, jobs in psychology itself are incredibly competitive, so to stand a chance of securing one, you need to get a postgraduate qualification (probably a doctorate in most fields, especially clinical psychology) and some relevant work experience. But even though there are so many psychology graduates — far more than there are jobs in psychology, and over 13,800 in total last year — this degree has a lower unemployment rate than average because its grads are so flexible and well-regarded by business and other industries across the economy. Everywhere there are good jobs in the UK economy, you'll find psychology graduates - and it's hardly surprising as the course helps you gain a mix of good people skills and excellent number and data handling skills. A psychology degree ticks most employers' boxes — but we'd suggest you don't drop your maths modules.
