Medical Sciences focuses on the cutting edge science that underpins modern medicine, fostering new discoveries and technologies which improve healthcare. You will study a comprehensive range of topics within medical science, and gain an in-depth understanding of how our bodies work, how disease is treated and how new technology is evolving in this exciting field.

You can choose to study Medical Sciences through selecting one of four possible pathways. Each pathway provides a strong foundation in medical science, but the flexibility of choosing your own distinct pathway allows you to shape the degree to best suit your future aspirations. The four pathways are:

- Pathway 1: Generic Medical Science

- Pathway 2: Psychology focused Medical Science

- Pathway 3: Engineering focused Medical Science

- Pathway 4: Computing, Visualisation and Artificial Intelligence focused Medical Science

Modules

You will study a number of units including Biological Research Skills, Cell Biology, Chemistry, Introduction to Molecular Genetics, Human Anatomy & Physiology, Introduction to Immunology, Advanced Skills for Biomedical Science, Biochemistry, Pathophysiology, Advanced Pharmacology and Toxicology, Biomolecules, Epidemiology and Infection along with a number of optional units.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

As a mixed subject within engineering where students get a chance to learn from a range of disciplines, this course isn't taken by as many people as some of the more specialist disciplines. Demand for engineering skills is high, though, and so unemployment rates are low and the average starting salary was a very healthy £26,400 for 2015 graduates. Graduates are able to specialise enough to be working in jobs in engineering — especially in design and development - as well as engineering project management. IT and management consultancy were some of the more common jobs outside engineering. Bear in mind that a lot of courses are four years long, and lead to a MEng qualification — this is necessary if you want to become a Chartered Engineer.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

This subject covers a group of related subjects, like audiology, speech therapy and degrees associated with language development. Speech therapy dominates and most graduates in this group go into jobs as speech therapists. About a fifth had studied audiology - there are not many audiology graduates each year in the UK, and they usually go on to jobs as — you guessed it — audiologists (mostly in hospitals but increasingly on the high street). Speech science or therapy graduates often go straight into speech therapy jobs when they graduate, although you don’t absolutely have to be a speech therapist if you take the course. There's a demand for graduates from all these courses and prospects are good.
