The BA (Hons) in Garment Technology has been developed to reflect and respond to contemporary practice within the global fashion industry. You will be encouraged to develop a professional, enquiring attitude within technical aspects of clothing production and an ability to become confident and self-motivated in your chosen practice.
You will gain experience and insight into this sector of the industry studying topics including; advanced pattern cutting, design management and realisation, garment fittings, grading and sizing. You will also study; production planning, costings and quality control.

You will gain primary knowledge from technical specialists, both within the teaching team and through guest visits to and from industry. This specialist course provides opportunities to work on live projects throughout, including an individual final year collaboration. Previous students have worked with fashion brands such Burberry, Hackett, Amanda Wakeley, Karen Millen, Monsoon and Topshop. Also technical sportswear companies sportswear companies including Adidas and Rab. Within this course you will use industry standard Gerber software and gain an insight into garment production both in the UK and overseas.

Modules

In your first year, introduction to a wide range of fashion subjects helps develop a good foundation of fashion knowledge and skills in both design and technical areas. Your second year helps to build advanced fashion skills and knowledge, and strengthens your personal and professional development in relation to your own career goals, through a choice of options, business planning and a four-week work placement. Opportunities to take part in the international Erasmus exchange programme exists during this year. You will have the opportunity to follow our four-year sandwich option, which provides the opportunity for a one-year internship in industry. In the final year, you have the chance to specialise in Fashion Design, Fashion Communication, Garment Technology, Design for Performance, or Fashion Accessories.

Want to work in a growing, creative sector where we are a world leader? Welcome to design! The UK has a proud reputation as a centre of design excellence, and last year just over 14,000 design degrees were awarded. At the moment, the jobs market looks a little better for fashion and textile designers, and not as good for multimedia or interactive designers — but that may change by the time you graduate. In general, design graduates are more likely than most to start their career in London, although that also varies by subject — last year fashion designers often found jobs in the North West, graphic designers in the South West, illustrators in the South West, East Anglia and Midlands, textile designers in the Midlands and the North West, and visual designers in Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Midlands. Graduates are in significant demand, so unemployment rates are well below the national graduate average and starting salaries are well above average. Much the most common industries for these graduates are now vehicle manufacture - there are not enough people with these degrees to go round and so the big employers tend to take the lion's share at the moment. But pretty much anywhere there is manufacturing, there are production engineers. Bear in mind that a lot of courses are four years long, and lead to an MEng qualification — this is necessary if you want to become a Chartered Engineer.

This is quite a specialist degree, but over 200 graduates complete courses every year, and employment rates are high. Graduates tend to go into the fashion and high street retail industry and specialist industries, such as footwear and jewellery, as fabric and clothing designers or buyers, and in marketing and PR. Some even go into management or fashion consultancy. Jobs used to be quite concentrated in specific parts of the country, particularly in London and Manchester, but there are now more opportunities elsewhere so keep your eyes peeled!
