Must include English Language or Literature or combined Language and Literature at Grade C or better minimum of 2 subjects. May consider Film Studies/Communication Studies/Creative Writing in lieu of English if applicant submits satisfactory essay set by the department.  For English and Drama will consider A Level in Performing Arts/Drama or Theatre Studies in lieu of English. In addition, A-level subjects that include an element of essay writing should be considered in the absence of English Lit and Lang. History, Religious Education  The Sciences, Philosophy,  etc. all include a component of this. If in doubt, refer to Admissions Tutor.

Must be considered along with a minimum of 2 of the following qualifications providing has A Level English at C or above: A-levels, BTEC Subsidiary Diplomas/ OCR Cambridge Technical Diplomas. 60 credits overall. Minimum of 45 credits at level 3 with a minimum of 18 credits in english related area at merit or above. Language, Literature and Culture subjects preferred but other subjects also considered. Applicants may be requested to complete an essay set by the department.

Obtain a minimum of 28 points overall. For students who do not already hold a GCSE in English Language at Grade C/4 or above Standard Level English Language (not literature) Group A English Group A - Grade 4 or above, OR English Group B - Grade 5  from the IB will be accepted. Students who do not complete the IB Diploma will be considered on the basis of their IB Certificates if they obtain a total of 14 points  or above from three higher level subjects and alongside other acceptable level 3 qualifications to meet 112 UCAS Tariff Points.

Pass the Irish Leaving Certificate with a minimum of 112 tariff points, achieved in four Higher level subjects. This must include English Language taken at either Ordinary level (minimum grade O1-O4 (or A-C/A1-C3)) or Higher level (minimum grade H5/D1).

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

English is one of the most popular degree subjects and in 2015, more than 11,000 students graduated with English degrees - although this does represent a fall from recent years. As good communication is so important to modern business, you can find English graduates in all parts of the economy, although obviously, you can't expect to get a job in science or engineering (computing is a different matter - it's not common but good language skills can be useful in the computing industry). There's little difference in outcomes between English language and English literature degrees, so don't worry and choose the one that suits you best. More English grads took another postgraduate course when they finished their degree than grads from any other subject - this is an important option. Teacher training was a common choice of second degree, as was further study of English, and journalism courses. But many English graduates changed course and trained in law, marketing or other languages -or even subjects further afield such as computing, psychology and even nursing. This is a very flexible degree which gives you a lot of options
