Business psychology

Psychology provides insights that help us to understand the behaviour of people in business and organisational contexts. This course uses knowledge of the human mind and our behaviour as a basis to investigate fundamental organisational functions, such as human resource management, finance, marketing, strategy and technology.

You will learn how psychological theories and research can be applied successfully to:

- recruit, select and assess employees

- change organisations

- train and motivate people

- develop individuals’ careers.

Modules

You take core and compulsory modules in each year and choose an option module worth 15 credits in Year 1. Year 1: Introduction to Business Psychology; Introductions: Understanding the Business World; Making Financial Decisions; Quantitative Methods; Strategy and Business Planning; Workplace Health and Safety: Psychology and Management. Year 2: Group Processes in Organizations; Individual Differences; Marketing Principles and Practices; Motivation and Job Design; Organizational Behaviour; Organizational Change; Psychopathology and the Business Environment; Research Methods for Business Psychology. Year 3: Advanced research methods; Careers and Counselling at Work; Dissertation in Business Psychology; Employment Relations and Human Resources Management; Learning and Employee Development.

Assessment methods

Examinations are held for approximately half of the assessments; the rest are assessed by coursework in the form of essays, typically 2000-3000 words in length, and case studies, presentations, group work and in-course tests. Research reports are required for the methods teaching. The final research project is assessed 100% by coursework.
