This is the 4 year course which includes a Professional Placement Year.

Our Global Development & Sustainability course at Bath Spa University teaches you about the environmental, social, economic and geopolitical challenges facing the developed and developing world. This course will examine the relevant geographical concepts and apply geographical methods and techniques to real-world problems. You will learn principles in physical and human geography throughout your degree, which you will apply to the study and solving of development issues.

**More about the Professional Placement Year**
A Professional Placement Year (PPY), traditionally known as a sandwich year, is where a student undertakes a period of work with an external organisation for between 9-13 months. The placement occurs between the students' second and third years of undergraduate study. Students can engage in up to 3 placements to make up the total time and are required to source the placement(s) themselves with support from the Careers & Employability Team.

Modules

Year 1 introduces the theories and realities of development and sustainability issues globally. You will acquire the foundational geography skills to equip you to develop your interests and skills in these fields. There are also optional modules to choose from, these may include social and economic inequalities; development organisations and structures; and many more.

In Year 2 you will acquire more specialist knowledge and skills in relevant topics, your research skills are developed through an extended research project where you will apply your growing mastery of your subject to real-world problems and issues. You will also start to further explore career options and planning, with opportunities to do a work placement or volunteering overseas. Optional modules are also available.

Year 3 will see you further specialise and develop your skills as an independent scholar by undertaking dissertation research. Alternatively you can undertake an extended work placement with a relevant research report. Optional modules are available.

There are two options for geography studies: the one we're talking about here is physical geography (there is also an option for geography courses with a more human or social steer). Like a lot of sciences, quite a few graduates in physical geography — about one in five — go on to further study, mainly for one-year Masters courses, and not just in geography, but in environmental sciences, conservation and in courses where we don't have enough graduates like planning and surveying. And in the world of work, graduates often go into environment, surveying and heritage work - and teaching. These are well-rounded degrees that help graduates get a range of useful skills and so careers such as marketing, business analysis, sports and management are also popular and it's often easy to convert or retrain once you have a geography degree.
