Our programmes introduce a full range of core engineering science modules coupled to practical projects to ensure a highly integrated and industry relevant degree programme.

Year 1: Core modules: transition mathematics; mathematics for engineers; electrical science; principles of mechanics; engineering practice; energy conversion; materials and processes; introduction to computer aided design; information technology applications (Matlab); introduction to business management; information technology and communications skills. Year 2: Core modules: value-based management; numerical methods/statistics; engineering mathematics 2; electrical systems engineering; solid mechanics; thermodynamics and fluids; dynamics and vibrations; measurement and instrumentation; product modelling; engineering materials; quality engineering. Year 3: Optional placement year. Year 4: Core modules: project management; main project; sensors and actuators; FEA; dynamics; control systems; design failure analysis; thermodynamics and fluids; operations strategy; financial reporting; energy efficiency. Year 5: Specialist MEng modules.

This subject has been affected by the recession and so you would normally expect some more encouraging stats – although things have improved this year. Nevertheless, engineers are in demand across multiple industries, but most stay in engineering, particularly in the oil industry, and in the car industry, in design and manufacturing. Jobs are all around the country, with Scotland and the South East the most likely places for a new mechanical engineer to find work at the moment – starting salaries for mechanical engineers in Scotland are actually higher there than in London, thanks to the oil industry, and only bettered by a handful of courses. Bear in mind that a lot of courses are four years long, and lead to an MEng qualification – this is necessary if you want to become a Chartered Engineer.
