Junior University: Liverpool celebration day diary

For school students taking part in Junior University, the project culminates with a special celebration day at their undergraduate mentor's university.

Junior University, our school programme that pairs Year 10 students with university mentors, has been in full swing this year.

What's Junior University? Learn more about the project...

A few months ago, we tagged along to a celebration day at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), where participating students got to present their final projects and a tour of campus, so they could see what an average day as a uni student is like.

Further down are some snaps from the day, but first...

Watch our quick video recap, featuring interviews with the students and undergraduate mentors and see what their favourite part of the day was.

We were buzzing to be in Liverpool

The Starbucks on campus was a pleasant surprise for the students, who weren't expecting something like this within the uni itself.

We were pretty pleased, too, following our early train - after all, we had a busy day ahead...

Getting to know the undergrads

The school students got to know the mentors they'd been working with up to now a little better. LJMU students Holly, Jane and Rebecca talked about how they made their uni choices, student life and some of the special experiences they'd had, like studying abroad.

But the day wasn't about watching endless slideshows

Soon the students were ready to explore campus.

This included some unusually-shaped buildings

'Guess-the-shape' was a common game throughout the tour.

Plus buildings with famous connections

This threw up the opportunity for some Beatles-themed pun action.

We also visited the careers office

It was great to see that there was support for students to find that first job after graduating.

Plus the hub of any university, the student union

It was here that the students really got a feel for the kind of social activities going on around the university, which - as you'll see - wasn't simply in one location.

Inside, we met this fluffy fella

He wasn't very responsive, but luckily the staff we met along the way were happy to chat.

Uni libraries are huge...

Hence the need for an efficient digital system to help you find what you need - something we got to play with.

Our trip coincided with deadline and exam season

We tiptoed around uni students deep in 'revision mode', careful not to disturb them.

The campus was dotted around the city

We chatted about the pros and cons of this, and whether a traditional, self-contained campus that was separate from the local area might be a better fit for some.

We passed student housing along the way

This was an opportunity for the undergraduate mentors to talk about accommodation at uni, specifically living off-campus. They shared their experience of finding housemates, going to viewings and dealing with landlords.

Project presentation time

This was in a proper lecture theatre - a very different feel to the students' classrooms back at school, but a good indicator for what learning at university is like.

The project was a debate over uniform in school

Neither side knew what arguments the other had prepared; this meant they had to listen closely and respond quickly. In the end, the panel decided it was too close to call.

There was just enough time to see more of Liverpool

We also wandered round the historical Albert Docks, which - on good word from our hosts - attracts lots of people with its mix of museums, cultural landmarks and places to grab a bite, on slightly less drab days.

Plus we got to be tourists too

We just had to pop by this haven for Beatles fans before leaving...
