Aberystwyth’s History and Mathematics degree provides the opportunity to study both subjects: you'll gain an understanding of how and why the world has evolved the way it has and from our Mathematics syllabus explore one of the supreme achievements of the human mind. Mathematics has been taught in Aberystwyth since 1872 so that the department builds on over 140 years of teaching excellence.

This course will equip you with analytical skills of interpretation, analysis and communication with the advanced mathematical skills that are highly sought after by employers. Our History subject areas range from early to modern history, political history, social history, economic and cultural history. Students who wish to study modules through the medium of Welsh can do so with the Departments of Mathematics and History.

At Aberystwyth, you will be a student in a vibrant, cosmopolitan bilingual university town, between the rolling Cambrian mountains and the stunning coastline of Cardigan Bay. You’ll be part of a campus university with its own Sports Centre, a busy Arts Centre; and you’ll be next door to the National Library of Wales, only one in five copyright libraries in the UK.

You will follow a clearly defined pathway through the study of core disciplines of mathematics and you will be introduced to new concepts and historical skills, Welsh History, the First World War and our choice of other modules which reflect a broad chronological and thematic range. In the second year, you will study real analysis, complex analysis, and linear algebra. You will examine European History, Germany and Nazism and The British Empire as well as the historical method, which examines the way in which the meaning, methods and writing of history have changed over time. In the third year, you will be able to direct your own study and specialise further by choosing from a wide range of elective modules in both disciplines.

You will be taught through a complementary set of teaching and learning methods and approaches, ranging from formal lectures, seminars and tutorials to practicals and projects. You will be assigned a personal tutor throughout your degree course, who will help you with any problems or queries, whether these are academic-related or personal issues. You should feel free to contact them at any time for help and advice.

Studying for a degree in History and Mathematics will equip you with a range of transferable skills which are highly valued by employers. These include the ability to express ideas and communicate information in a clear, structured manner both written and orally, effective problem-solving, researching and creative thinking skills. You will also develop your ability to work independently, manage your time and organise yourself effectively. Throughout this degree scheme, your self-motivation and self-reliance will increase; you will grow in confidence working as a team to discuss concepts, accommodate different ideas and reach an agreement.

Our department has strong links with the heritage sector, and an established portfolio of student placements (including Welsh-medium opportunities). These placements provide the opportunity for ‘hands-on’ experience and are very valuable for your CV.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

History is a very popular subject (although numbers have fallen of late) — in 2015, over 10,000 UK students graduated in a history-related course. Obviously, there aren't 11,000 jobs as historians available every year, but history is a good, flexible degree that allows graduates to go into a wide range of different jobs, and consequently history graduates have an unemployment rate comparable to the national graduate average. Many — probably most — jobs for graduates don't ask for a particular degree to go into them and history graduates are well set to take advantage. That's why so many go into jobs in the finance industry, human resources, marketing, PR and events management, as well as the more obvious roles in education, welfare and the arts. Around one in five history graduates went into further study last year. History and teaching were the most popular further study subjects for history graduates, but law, journalism, and politics were also popular postgraduate courses.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Want to feel needed? This is one of the most flexible degrees of all and with so much of modern work being based on data, there are options everywhere for maths graduates. With all that training in handling figures, it's hardly surprising that a lot of maths graduates go into well-paid jobs in the IT or finance industries, and last year, a maths graduate in London could expect a very respectable average starting salary of £27k. And we're always short of teachers in maths, so that is an excellent option for anyone wanting to help the next generation. And if you want a research job, you'll want a doctorate — and a really good maths doctorate will get you all sorts of interest from academia and finance — and might secure some of the highest salaries going for new leavers from university.
