In choosing to study this three year Bachelor of Arts joint honours degree in Mathematics/Drama and Theatre Studies at Aberystwyth University you will immerse yourself in two rigorous and challenging disciplines. Mathematics is fundamentally important to modern society, contributing to numerous facets of life, including science, engineering, technology and finance. In Mathematics you will study the essential core disciplines, supplemented by a great choice of elective specialties. In Drama and Theatre Studies you will look through and beyond historic and established forms to explore what drama, theatre and performance can be now and in the future. You will have the opportunity to examine a wide range of critical and creative forms and practices and develop your capacity as an independent theatre-maker, thinker and scholar. Graduates of Mathematics are in significant demand across many industries for their problem-solving abilities, clear analytical thought processes and capacity for logical argument, whilst the intellectual, practical and transferable skills in communication and teamwork acquired whilst studying Drama and Theatre Studies will prepare you for a variety of careers in the creative arts and beyond.

Modules

The mathematical side of your degree will be taught through a complementary set of teaching and learning methods and approaches, ranging from formal lectures, seminars and tutorials to practicals and individual and group-based project work, where you will be assessed through a combination of coursework, presentations, reports and examinations. In your Drama and Theatre Studies side, you will be taught through practical workshops, small-group seminars, and lectures. This diversity of activity is an essential part of our teaching and learning philosophy, and creates a uniquely exciting and productive learning environment. You will be assessed through formal and performed essays, written and practical examinations, critical and creative portfolios, practical productions, seminar presentations and group activities. As you progress through the degree we place increasing emphasis on developing your independence and self-management, allowing you to take responsibility for your own learning.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Drama is a very popular degree subject — in 2015, over 5,000 degrees were awarded to UK graduates. With so many graduates around, jobs in acting are very sought-after and often gained through personal contacts, or through your careers service so be prepared to practise your people skills and to make full use of your university facilities. But there are lots of roles in the arts for drama graduates, in direction, production, audio-visual, set and clothing design and PR. The skills taught by drama courses can be useful elsewhere — a lot of the economy can use people who can perform and present in front of others, and so drama graduates can be found in teaching, management, advertising, project and events organisation and community work. Be aware that freelancing and self-employment is common, as are what is termed 'portfolio careers' — having several part-time jobs or commissions at once — one in ten drama graduates last year had more than one job on the go at once after six months. And starting salaries are not the best - but nevertheless the large majority of drama graduates going into acting still felt that it was just the job for them regardless of pay.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Want to feel needed? This is one of the most flexible degrees of all and with so much of modern work being based on data, there are options everywhere for maths graduates. With all that training in handling figures, it's hardly surprising that a lot of maths graduates go into well-paid jobs in the IT or finance industries, and last year, a maths graduate in London could expect a very respectable average starting salary of £27k. And we're always short of teachers in maths, so that is an excellent option for anyone wanting to help the next generation. And if you want a research job, you'll want a doctorate — and a really good maths doctorate will get you all sorts of interest from academia and finance — and might secure some of the highest salaries going for new leavers from university.
