Equine studies

Our three year Equine Science degree at Aberystwyth University will allow you to explore all aspects of horse reproduction including breeding technologies, nutrition, welfare and care for maximum performance, and management in relation to exercise physiology and health. With a long history of teaching Equine Science, the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences offers the Equine Science student outstanding facilities to study this subject in depth, together with valuable work experience, internship and training opportunities in this specialist field. This degree will allow you to explore horse reproduction including breeding technologies, nutrition, welfare and care for maximum performance and management in relation to exercise physiology and health. You will be studying in a University that is ranked **top 5 in the UK and 1st in Wales** for student satisfaction (NSS, 2017). Our students benefit from a fantastic equine centre with an Olympic size indoor arena, all-weather mange, round pen, horse walker and livery facilities including turnout. You will have the opportunity to undertake work experience, international study exchange placements, internships, bursaries and training towards BHS exams. What are our graduates doing now? Our graduates are currently in these following fields; Research Science; Equine nutrition; Stud Management; Agriculture business; Education; Scientific journalism. Studying Equine Science will allow you to develop specialist skills which include: the ability to evaluate nutrition, training and welfare needs of horses; undertake physiological assessment and monitoring. This degree is engineered to improve your career prospects by giving you a head start in today's tremendously competitive equine industry.

Modules

In the first year you will discover the anatomy and physiology of the horse, key principles of genetics and metabolism, the equine industry and the effects of exercise and training upon specific body systems. You may also take part in a study tour, this may consist of different equine-related organisations, racing training stables, studs and racecourses and sales. Other enterprises examined may include veterinary laboratories, veterinary practices or schools, equine sporting events, non-thoroughbred breeding and/or training centres, and auction houses. In your second year you will explore applied horse nutrition, comparative exercise physiology, mammalian reproductive anatomy and physiology. In the third year you will study equine stud management, advanced equine nutrition, digestive disorders, behaviour and welfare.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Graduates don't generally get jobs as vets when they graduate; much the most common jobs tend to be roles caring for animals, such as veterinary nurses. Some of these jobs are not currently classified as professional level occupations, but in reality, you need a degree to get these jobs (and probably always have done), and graduates in them report that they got the jobs that they wanted.
