Roehampton is the only campus university in London, located in the south-west of the city, about 30 minutes from the West End. Our campus offers excellent facilities for learning, teaching and working, and opportunities for students to get involved in volunteering, playing sport, or joining one of our many student societies. It is also one of the safest campuses in the capital.

1st year, Training Teachers Primary ReportYou have to be very careful to budget well on a student loan, but the uni offers a few different restaurants all of which sell great food, at great value. The uni also offers a "job shop" where you can find offers of employment both within the uni and outside the uni. I strongly advise future students to get some form of part time work which they can fit in around their studies, it helps pay the bills but it is also looks great on your CV.

Personal tutors are also very helpful, because they can give feedback that is target to you and they can show you practical ways of how to improve in your studies, plus you are able to talk to them about other areas of your stuent life, not just academic.

London is an expensive city, but with planning you can benefit from a plethora of inexpensive gems. The campus is based in an expensive part of London, so I would advise students to travel around. I live in south east London, and so I expect to pay a more reasonable price for my can of coke!

Both academically and out on placement. I have attended a university previously and in comparison, can not fault Roehampton staff. A specific example is that before my first placement three different members of staff gave me their mobile number and said to contact them at any time. I did not need to, but was really nice to know that that support was there.

The library is well equipped and usually has all the books on the reading list, however, around deadlines there are not enough computers in the library and it is very hard to book a room in the library. The gym is small but reasonably priced. I do find that the tennis courts could be bigger.
1st year, Journalism ReportI don't live on campus, but I've been to Southlands and Mount Clare, and both of them are quite nice, of course you never know who you might live with in a flat, maybe the kitchen will be dirty at all times and no one will be bothered to clean their dishes, maybe your flatmates will party every night while you need a good night sleep - these might be the biggest minuses of accomodation, but overall all the buildings are in good condition, Mount Clare is a bit off campus, but rooms there are bigger, it's surrounded by trees and you can see Richmond Park through some windows, the common room is really big and has table tennis, pool table, big tv with numerous of channels, sofas, computer room, etc., it's a really nice place to live. Southlands is usually for 1st years, it's right next to Southlands college, rooms there are smaller, kitchens are common rooms with sofas as well, as far as I know you have your window, table, bed, chair, wardrobe and sink there, all you need. And every communal area of every accomodation is cleaned by cleaners once or twice a week. And if anything is not working, you can always contact a cleaner or someone in charge and it will be repaired by the next day.

2nd year, Mathematical Methods Reportyou can't pay by card anywhere on campus and there are only two cash machines, one of two usually doesn't work, so you have to run up and down to take cash; information center not really useful with things like international student exchange (from Roehampton you can go to Australia or California, but once you need any particular info they send you to 3rd people and then back again in circles); on our first 3 weeks of 1st year half of the students had their subjects and timetables mixed up somehow, that was a lot of running up and down too, but I guess every university has the same in the beginning; the area of Roehampton is a bit away from campus, but it has some student accomodations and shops, etc., and it is said to be quite dangerous, and looks dodgy overall, but I and my friends, who live there, personally have never confronted anything bad there.

1st year, Training Teachers Primary ReportA cup of tea is £1.10! It is fairtrade but still, that's expensive. There is nowhere you can get anything cheaper either as it is a bus ride away from town. There is a tesco in town and a co-op near the campus to stock up on food to make your own sandwiches and bottles of drink and this helps keep costs down. There are plenty of pubs/bars in town and shops for part time work though get in there before Sept as once people have arrived at uni jobs go quickly

Whichlands college is housed in a lovely old manor house, the main campus has more of a mix of old and new building and is set in some very nice gardens. There are several computer rooms in each of the 4 colleges where you can usually find a quiet place to work with 24 hour access
3rd year, Others In Social Studies ReportIf you are a UK/EU based student, you can get a loan for studies, if you live in the UK for not less than 3 years, you can get a student loan for living expenses as well. I live off campus because I find it cheaper than living on campus, but then I have to pay for travel tickets if I live away from Roehampton, which is not that bad. As soon as you come here you need to apply for student oyster card on tfl.gov.uk and pay extra 10 pounds, which is worth it. then, e.g., weekly bus travelcard is around 14 pounds, if you just top up your oyster card with money, one bus journey is 1,40, if you don't have an oyster card or no money on it, then it's 2,20 - quite a lot if you need just to go to a shop and back, which is 4,40 already. there are quite a lot of buses going around, to Richmond, Hammersmith, Putney, etc. these are the places you can always find a job at, or somewhere even closer than that. if you try hard, look at gumtree.com or just give out your CVs everywhere, you'll definitely find sth. There are job opportunities on campus as well, but apply as soon as you come here, and they pay well, and the job is not to hard, you can always find out more at the student information centre right in the middle of campus. food is not too expensive here, around 4 pounds for drink and a proper meal. there is a canteen, which this year was opened only from 12 to 2:30pm, which is annoying if you have lectures at that time, but food is good there. otherwise there's always chips/beans/different kinds of chicken/salads etc. in Quad Cafe in Southlands and near Starbucks and The Union in Froebel

1st year, Psychology ReportI love the university campus - the stunning surroundings and the relaxed, open atmosphere really do make a huge difference to the whole feel of the university. There's nothing quite like finishing lectures on a sunny day to find half the student population out on the lawn enjoying drinks and barbeques after their classes! There is a huge range of things for people to get involved in, from sports and societies to community activities and organised social events, which means that people from different courses mix more than I had expected and the university really encourages this!

There are a lot of clubs, societies e.t.c and the thing that stood out to me was if you cant find a club you like you can make your own. The system of having programme reps means your opinion is heard by the people who can make a difference to your uni life and this is great!
1st year, Psychology ReportThe library is brilliant if you are a Primary Education, Education or Early Childhood Studies student, otherwise you might have to look for a library specialized in your area of studies from somewhere else in London. The computer suites are always open 24/7 and the library has extended 24/7 opening hours before exam or hand-in periods, which makes studying easier to accommodate to your personal schedule and preferences. The university has a tennis field, a netball field, dance studios, a gym and a field for outdoor sports (e.g. rugby, football).
2nd year, Academic Studies In Nursery Education ReportThe halls are spacious enough in the indivual rooms but the communal areas are not always big enough or have actual comfort areas to relax with each other. The kitchens are not big enough for the amount of people sharing so you need to get in first to be able to cook!
2nd year, Sociology ReportFood on campus is affordable but not cheap; if you live on campus it is cheaper to make your own food in halls of accommodation. The student prized drinks from the Union Bar are cheap. The University provides some part-time work opportunities. There are no additional course costs. Get a student Oyster as soon as you get accepted to University, so you get it by the time you move into halls and get a 33% discount of all traveling costs.

2nd year, Prose Writing ReportThe university does provide help on these aspects. The university is surrounded by lots of areas so provides lots of opportunities for employment. The uni has good transport links being close to an overground station, underground station and having lots of bus links.
3rd year, Training Teachers Junior (Key Stage 2) ReportThe accommodation at Roehampton is certainly VERY varied, but on the whole I would say it is well priced (prices are proportional to standard of accommodation!) and well managed. Some of the older blocks such as Bede and Newman are in need of renovation - the rooms are really nice, spacious and well furnished but the kitchens are tiny; definitely not big enough for the number of people sharing them. The more modern blocks such as Lee House and the accommodation on Whitelands are more expensive but worth it; there are larger communal spaces and the majority of rooms are en suite, with far fewer people to a flat than in the older blocks. The uni has a good system for reporting maintenance issues (although it took us a while to find out what this system was!) and problems are usually sorted within a reasonable amount of time if they are serious. Security has been massively improved in the last couple of years, with keycard systems installed even in the older buildings and I think the worst security issue I ever encountered in my time in halls was some food going missing, so nothing particularly threatening!

The off-campus uni accomodation is situated in a slightly dodgy area so watch out for that but otherwise is again to a good standard. The private accomodation varies as it does anywhere but my experiences have all been good.

3rd year, Zoology Not Elsewhere Classified ReportAlthough the uni cannot do anything about this, they do fail to mention it at all. One half of Roehampton (the town) is a huge council estate. Within this estate are located the Whitelands campus (Psychology and Sport Psychology) and Mount Claire (uni run halls blocks for students not in the first year). It is not a very pleasant place to walk through and I personally avoid it. Thankfully the entrance to Whitelands is only up one road through the estate but Mount Claire is located in the heart of it. The range of societies is quite poor unless you're looking for a sport/religious club, although the film society is quite good. The library is not open 24 hours. Although they occasionally open 24 hours during heavy deadline periods they don't keep this altered schedule for the exam period when it is really needed. There is a small section of the library which is 24 hours but there is no access to group work spaces here.

I know too many people that have wasted valuable places and make my university experience seem less worthwhile. The university simply allows people to re-enrol despite never submitting a piece of coursework, and encourages students to try again despite no effort in making them interested in their course regardless. Also, my third year modules are not as exciting as I'd hoped them to be. There are very few courses available in the autumn semester, whereas in the Spring semester there are so many. Also, I believe that dissertations should be compulsory to degree study - as it is more academically demanding than opting for another spring module.

3rd year, Training Teachers Primary ReportThe library needs a wider range of zoology books and journal access and to make it easier to get inter-library loans as its still a paper form process. It needs to improve access to the library for the furthest away campuses too. IT facilities are decent and pretty up to date - you'll use moodle for accessing your lecturers presentations/notes and messages and stuff. Computer suites do get pretty busy at some points of the year but you find that most people are checking facebook not doing uni work which is annoying when you have 10 minutes to print your work for deadline and no access to a computer! Wifi is running throughout the uni though and access to that is good but keep your laptop locked up if staying in halls as theft is common. The lab is equiped with photo microscopes and stuff though most students will only use the normal microscopes and assay equipment of which there are plenty to go round. There is no musuem of zoology like there is at reading but they do have enough skulls and complete skeletons of a variety of animals for everyone to get a look at anatomy.

Eating and drinking can campus can be expensive, so better take some food with you from a superstore (much cheaper).

But the cliques range across a broad range of students so you shouldn't feel too left out even if you class yourself as "alternative".

Putney, Kingston, Richmond and East Sheen are all easily accessible areas where you can go out. There is a univeristy "jobshop" which helps students to find part time work whilst they study - I have worked as a Nanny for the past two years which has worked well around my studies. Bus and travel prices are rising and that does get quite costly - but that is the same across London so no getting away from that (get a bike?) On the Drama course you may have to pay additionally for theatre visits and course books (although I am led to believe that with the rising course costs these are going to be supplemented by the department).

There are local shops only a few minutes walk (or few seconds bus) away and they are great. You can also order from ASDA or Tesco, who are happy to deliver to us. All students are allowed to partake in a language, free of charge, on top of their studies, and there is plenty of part time work, societies and voluntary jobs available.

1st year, Sociology Of Science & Technology ReportI was disappointed at how rough the local area is, there is a huge housing estate right next to the University and it can get scary at night. The security on campus should be tighter. When lectures are cancelled there is often no one to take over from a lecturer if they are ill. Journalism and Creative Writing don't have lectures in the summer term because there are no exams, I feel that we could have more lectures. I think that the University should offer summer schools to students who want to finish their degrees earlier. There is too much emphasis on drinking and partying and the SU really endorses this. There is not much entertainment provision made for students who don't fit this type.

1st year, Anthropology ReportOn campus accommodation is good - obviously it's close to your lectures and seminars as well as to the bus stops. However, be careful when choosing which accommodation block you are in! Bede and Newman are for the party animals. Lawerence is very close to the Primary Education and Dance Departments, the gym and MUGA (Multi Use Games Area) - and the Union Bar. Its close proximity to the Union Bar is a double edged sword - it's good as you live close to the rendez-vous point for the beginning of most social occasions, but, the bar is open to midnight every night and has a "disco" on Fridays until 2am - noise, noise, noise. The other on-campus accommodations seem more reserved (although not boring by any means) than Bede or Newman and are not as unfortunately situated as Lawerence. Off campus there is quite a bit of choice, but you definitely need to get in there early as the majority of second and third year students start their house hunting from as early in the year as January. There is a section of the university website dedicated to accommodation, including off-campus options, as well as an off-campus accommodation officer who is very helpful, so if you do miss out on on-campus accommodation for your first year, definitely get in touch with her.
1st year, Other European Literature ReportWithin the town there is only a small co-op and a few unbranded mini-marts. Despite its size the co-op is very well stocked and will do if you don't want to get a bus anywhere. One bus away is a huge Asda, Tesco (bus number 265) and Waitroise (493). So food on any budget is available for £2.70 (£1.35 either way using an oyster card). On campus there is a small overpriced shop with a poor selection, but might do if you are desperate. It also recently started stocking alcohol. The price of drinks at the union bar is not too bad, but it is still in London so be prepared for a shock if you come from outside the city. Being London there are quite a lot of job opportunities in the surrounding area, be it in retail, catering or something else. And most towns are only one bus ride away.
2nd year, Psychology ReportThere are a few cafes and a shop on campus but they are quite expensive. In the local area there is only a co-op and a few convenience stores, as well as a big ASDA about 30 minutes walk away. Putney and Barnes are the closest railway stations and they are within walking distance but it costs about 7 pounds to get into central London and it takes about 40 minutes in total. There are a lot of bus routes into more central areas of London, however the buses are often late, overcrowded and dirty.

2nd year, Sociology ReportI found living on campus to be a relatively cheap year, certainly cheaper than living off campus since then. The uni has good public transport links so as long as you have an oyster card you can get anywhere in London for a decent price - but the uni does not provide any shuttle buses or similar like Kingston uni does. My course has not incurred any additional costs that we were not warned about, and my only major course-related expenses have been books which are all available in the university library should you choose not to buy them. Food is definitely something that I spent less than I had expected on, because the university is only a bus ride away from an enormous supermarket which has everything a student could possibly need and more, about as cheap as it's possible to get! On campus the food is fairly limited but not too expensive, with good opening hours.

There are also some specific 'quiet' areas where it is much easier to focus if you have assignments coming up. The labs are very well exiped and ussually are less busy than the library so computers can be used in those as well. Printing in library is quite expensive, so if you have to print a lot of pages, makes sure your account is prepared for it :)

The Union has decent prices on both food and drink, and the other places are pretty decent too. It's easy enough if you can stick to a budget. If you're bad with money in general, you might want to go to the Money Doctors.

The cheapest is to get an oyster card, thats quickest too. With work there isn't anything in walking distance really. But Kingston and Putney are a bus away and they both have lots of retail.

1st year, Others In Education ReportI think the library and online facilities are excellent, and really benefit the learning process: you are able to access a range of electronic media, manage your account online, book meeting / study rooms and INT equipment. Additionally there is an excellent 'academic liason' service aimed at addressing study skills. These features coupled with 24hr access for students are some of the ways in which Roehampton university effectively facilitates our learning. The university campus is picturesque and quite lovely with several lakes ducks geese and ... er squirrels which makes a difference when seeking to recharge your batteries. The university building are reasonably close together. In my view the sports facilities are fairly basic and quite expensive for London, but as a Londoner I have no problem finding alternatives. Academic support is excellent, however as a student commuting in I have to say the support extended for personal amenities are, in my view, substandard to be specific; the on site catering is also expensive and lacking, so I bring a packed lunch/ dinner (depending on how late I am working); there is scarce (and I mean scarce) provision for basic amenities, such as lockers - this was important for me as I cycle 12 miles to get to uni and a convenient locker would have been wonderful. This however does not colour my view that Roehampton is an excellent university, and I would wholeheartedly recommend it to prospective students.

I lived in Templeton, which is not actually on campus, which was something I was unaware of. I think this should be made clear on the website/ through accommodation leaflets/ offers. However despite this initial letdown, it was a lovely place to live in and I am so glad I had the opportunity to live there. With large grounds, a huge common room and kitchen, as well as massive rooms in the main house, it really was nothing like 'typical student accommodation', and for the better.

1st year, Psychology ReportI stayed in Whitelands halls and I highly recommend it. It is known as the party halls- but the standard of the rooms and kitchen is really high and it is really sociable. It is also possible to use the Whitelands campus to return library books and 24hour computer room. There is no television signal though so do not get a license. Also, the one thing I do not like about Roehampton halls is that they have flat reps.

There's also many more causal areas located around colleges which are good for quick cats-ups in between lectures. However most of these areas are on the main colleges with it being a bit sparse elsewhere.

I think it is extremely unfair. Opportunities for part-time work are there, but it is difficult when timetables are given out at late notice and lectures are timetabled randomly throughout the day.

The university staff are usually quite good about fixing things like dead light bulbs and blocked showers, but there might be a time delay. It is sensible to keep valuables out of sight or keep your curtains closed when you're not in the room if you're on the ground floor as otherwise that might tempt robbers.

The food is good and the drinks are very reasonably priced - but the decor/layout needs an overhaul. Outside is nice - there's a decked area and lots of picnic benches, but inside is soulless and uncomfortable. There needs to be more comfortable seating, more "booth" type areas so that if you are meeting a group of friends you can hear each other. I know this isn't too bad, but it's my only real complaint about the university as a whole.

3rd year, Prose Writing ReportAt Roehampton, I think it is fairly easy to manage your costs, obviously that all depends on the student though! In relation to food, the best bet would be to make use of the local Asda as food and drink on campus can be quite expensive! That said, Digby campus does offer a nice variety of food. To make money stretch, part time work is actively encouraged by the Uni, particularly through Freshers Fair events and leaflets. There are also opportunities to work for and within the uni itself, which offers all benefits. To save money on transport, a student oyster card is needed, though through Richmond Park, you could walk to a lot of places!

There is also a wide online access to resources so a lot of the time you don't even have to leave your house! There is also a good amount of support available such as careers advisers, student support stuff, financial support staff etc. The theatre studios, although looking a bit shabby, are well fitted for performances and there is a wide amount of space. There is a gym and lots of playing fields around.

I used to chip in with my friends for a taxi, and then we would be able to bring our shopping back without the difficulty of a bus for the same price - and sometimes even less. In terms of part-time work, it'd be best to volunteer in order to gain experience on your CV. There are numerous charity shops within walking distance of the university and this led me to part-time retail work in Putney and Fulham during my second year.

Also there are periods of times where the library is open 24 hours a day which is useful.
1st year, Anthropology ReportThe main campus is very beautiful, especially the Froebel Lake and Lawn. During the end of the spring term and exam term when the weather is nice students can be found sunbathing, drinking and BBQing on the lawn - the atmosphere is great. As a Psychology student I can only speak for the Psychology department, but the staff are generally very approachable and keen to engage in discussion with students. There are no 'arrogant' lecturers who give of an air of being above you and your ideas and staff do participate in events with students such as the student vs/ staff rounders match. If you are a member of the uni gym (around £140 annually) you have free access to a number of weekly sessions such as Zumba, Street Dance and Yoga.

This is the same in the bar and the library. There are loads of open spaces to relax in the summer and enough inside space to enjoy in the winter. There is Costa down at whitelands if you want a short walk if not Starbucks is available on Froebel.

There are not many shops- only coop so that can be expensive- but there is an asda on a short bus journey. My one tip would be to never do a big shop and just buy as and when u need it. Worked out cheaper for me. Some courses (mine) has a huge reading list- in particular primary education due to the amount of different subjects. Most of the texts are available on the library or online so I would only buy a few essential ones (Such as 1 maths, 1 english, 2 teaching and learning).
