Top universities for nightlife... as voted by students [2012-13]

Whether you're looking for the best nightclubs around or a great music scene, evening entertainment is a big part of university life. With that in mind we asked current students to tell us how they rate the local nightlife close to their unis - and here are the top performers...

We surveyed almost 10,000 current students to find out first-hand how they rate their university on a whole range of characteristics, including the local nightlife, students' union nightlife and political scene. The universities characterised as having a varied local nightlife offer a good mix of clubs, pubs and music venues in and around the local area. 

Here are the top performers  - plus a little taster of what each place could offer you. Perhaps unsurprisingly, city universities featured highly...

1. Northumbria University

Did you know...

  • Newcastle, where the uni is situated, has two nightlife hotspots - Quayside and Bigg Market – but Ouseburn Valley is also a popular area with students looking for something a bit different and more relaxed. Here you will find a range of independent pubs and live music venues

2. University of Liverpool

Did you know...

  • Liverpool after dark caters for all tastes, with everything from real ale pubs to more glamorous nights out – the Newz Bar on Water Street is a favourite with local TV stars and football players

  • Fancy a more low-key evening? Head to the Albert Dock and watch the ferries drift past from one of its many bars and restaurants

5. University of Manchester

Did you know...

  • Many students live in Fallowfield, which has a wide variety of pubs, bars and restaurants offering student deals 
  • Manchester's most popular clubs include Sankeys, Essential and 5th Avenue

Did you know...

  • Head to Call Lane for bars with a great party buzz, including Oporto, one of Leeds most loved venues
  • If gigs are more your thing, The Cockpit is an independently run live music venue which has seen many big acts start their careers - Coldplay and The Killers have graced its stage in previous years

10. University College London, University of London

Did you know...

  • Going out in London isn't necessarily as expensive as you might think - many clubs have student nights and offer discounts, such as Club de Fromage (02 Academy Islington), with cheesy tunes, fancy dress and cheaper entry with an NUS card every Saturday 
  • For a more relaxed evening out, The Social - tucked away behind Oxford Street, not too far away from UCL's Bloomsbury location - has live music every night, attracting a laid-back crowd with its free entry and reasonable drink prices
